Full Job Description

Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

Sitting in the REMA Programme team, you will work at the forefront of the energy transition and have a central role in delivering decarbonisation.

This team leads ESO's work on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA). REMA represents the most far-reaching review of energy market arrangements for the last 20 years. Sitting at the nexus between government policy, the market interface and the physical operation of the system, ESO has exceptional visibility of the challenges facing GB as it decarbonises and is an important partner and stakeholder in the REMA process.

The expansion of our ambitious and dynamic team has given rise to analyst positions in our Implementation Strategy Team. Implementation of REMA reforms will be highly complex, and will involve significant changes, both within NESO and across the industry. The postholder will be critical in helping our organisation to understand the key elements of this complex implementation - scoping the high-level requirements; mapping the activities and flows of information and data; assessing what changes would be needed to our key systems, processes and frameworks.

This role can be based from Warwick, Wokingham or Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.,

  • Support the delivery of the REMA implementation strategy for NESO, with a focus on reforms to the wholesale market, dispatch/scheduling, balancing, operability reforms, and reforms to the CfD or CM schemes.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across NESO as well as across the industry to identify key areas of change in frameworks/codes, systems, processes, platforms, tools and data requirements.

  • Contribute towards assessments of potential impacts of changes, including high-level costs and timescales involved, as well as impacts on wider systems, processes and frameworks across NESO and the industry.

  • Scope and oversee consultancy projects to complement in-house analysis

  • Ensure that implementation is considered as part of any decisions made within the NESO programme, educating colleagues on areas of risk and opportunity.

What we do isn't just important - it's essential. That's why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we're looking for someone who:

  • An appreciation of change management principles, methodologies and tools, including skills that have enabled you to solve multifaceted and complex problems, which have led to a transition to, and embedding of, new ways of working.

  • An ability to inspect, cleanse and transform data to provide in-depth analysis on complex issues and present key findings to senior stakeholders.

  • Experience of coordinating, reviewing and challenging the work of external economic consultants.

  • An understanding of the issues faced in GB electricity markets and how these are being addressed by policy-makers and the energy regulator.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, with a proven ability to guide, persuade and influence others through developed skills of communication and diplomacy.

  • A flexible working approach that enables you to lead and prioritise a wide range of demands and activities whilst maintaining a professional and positive focus.

At National Grid ESO, our mission is to meet the challenges of the future and deliver cleaner, affordable electricity. We constantly strive to do this better by using technology and innovation to transform the way we work., In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

  • The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users' need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won't just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain - you'll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

A competitive salary between £50,000 - £60,000pa - dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.

As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.
  • Full support and career-development resources to expand your skills, enhance your expertise, and maximise your potential along your career journey.

  • A diverse and inclusive community of belonging, where teammates are empowered to bring ideas to the table.

  • Generous Total Rewards Plan - comprising of health, finance and wealth, work/life balance, and career benefits.
