Full Job Description

We have exciting opportunities for Welding and Fabrication Apprentices to join our team of experts at our specialist research and testing centre in Cumbria. We carry out large scale hazards testing and our experts test and develop products and processes for the Energy Industry with the aim of safeguarding life, property and the environment., As a Metal Fabricator Apprentice you will get involved in a wide variety of activities, supporting the unique work that we do here at Spadeadam.

  • You will learn to carry out metal fabrication work using things such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plate and metal sheet etc, welding joints and producing and assembling metal products.

  • You'll initially be closely supported by our experts before becoming responsible for the quality and accuracy of your own work as you progress, learning how to obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation and ensuring your work conforms to relevant specifications/engineering drawings, quality standards and procedures.

  • We will also learn all about critical health, safety and welfare legislation to ensure that you work safely and securely within our unique environment and learn how to safely use and maintain a wide variety of specialist tools, machinery and industrial equipment.

  • Our Metal Fabricator apprenticeship is aimed at practical individuals, who also love working outside and looking to develop themselves in a specialist trade.

  • As you progress, you'll have the opportunity to progress further and experience working across a mixture of different construction and engineering projects at our world famous Spadeadam Research and Testing site in Cumbria., You will join us on a permanent contract during August, with your apprenticeship programme formally commencing from early September and lasting approximately 36 months.

  • Upon completion you will be awarded the industry recognised Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship standard in addition to receiving a Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge).

  • During your apprenticeship you will gain real practical experience, working onsite three days a week alongside colleagues here at Spadeadam, utilising our new, state of the art engineering workshop, with the remaining two days per week dedicated to off the job learning via our specialist apprentice Training Provider (Lakes College in Carlisle - all travel costs are reimbursed), gaining new skills and knowledge.

  • One day will be spent developing and enhancing your fabrication and welding practical skills, the other day will be learning welding technology knowledge towards your Diploma.

  • You will also have access to lots of online support materials and 1-2-1 sessions with your tutor to help reinforce your learning.

  • GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade GCSE - grades 9, 8, 7, 6, 5) Essential
    GCSE or equivalent Physics or Chemistry (Grade GCSE - grades 9, 8, 7, 6, 5) Desired
