Full Job Description

An opportunity has arisen in the Genetics and Molecular Pathology Department within the Molecular Haem-Oncology section for a Molecular Biologist. This position has become available due an increase in workload with the Molecular Haem-Oncology section.
This is a full-time position based in Molecular Pathology on level 5 of the Halo building, and the role is vital to the efficient running of the Molecular Haem-Oncology section. In accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures, the post-holder will participate in the analysis of biological samples by receiving, preparing and processing samples under the supervision of Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered staff. The successful candidate will work within the Molecular Haem-Oncology team comprising of an operations manager, one senior biomedical scientist, one pre-registration clinical scientist, one trainee biomedical scientist and three molecular biologists, although there are more than 60 staff in the department as a whole.
This role includes clerical input of patient and test details into the laboratory computer system and performing required supportive duties, for example preparation of reagents, administrative and clerical tasks, and maintenance of equipment. The role also includes extraction of nucleic acids from a range of different sample types such as bone marrow, peripheral blood, FFPE, CSF and pleural fluid. There may also be the opportunity to learn and carry out some basic assay set-up.

A science degree or equivalent and attention to detail is essential and laboratory experience in healthcare is desirable, but full training will be provided.

The successful applicant will be expected to work 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 08:30 to 17:00 or 9:00 to 17:30 although flexibility may be required.
