Full Job Description

As a Structural Surveyor, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will capture the material state of submarines, surface ships and complex assets and to provide repair recommendations IAW platform the work list and to meet the required standards.

Day-to-day, you'll undertake close visual inspections to identify signs of corrosion, erosion, and deformation. You will also:

  • Recommend suitable repairs from survey findings for submission to customer

  • Produce survey reports based on relevant standards and best engineering practice

  • Identify Work In Way removal and communicate effectively with production teams to enable survey work

  • Take an active role in maintaining health and safety standards within the department


  • This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

  • Good understanding of company health and safety standards and personal expectations.

  • Awareness of relevant standards, e.g., defence standards, British standards, classification society rules and regulatory body requirements.

  • Working knowledge of nuclear submarines, surface ships, floating assets, and dock facility structure and repair methodologies.

  • Experience of fabrication and welding.

  • Awareness of inspection techniques and NDE processes


  • Qualifications for the Structural Surveyor
  • ONC qualified and extensive knowledge of constructive engineering desired.

  • A marine based engineering apprenticeship (constructive base an advantage).

  • Completed required Health and Safety training.

  • Completed required Radiological training.

  • Be able to meet the security requirements to enable access to all areas of nuclear submarines, The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
