Full Job Description

Villiers Park Scholars Programme Learning Mentor

£18,000 - £19,400 pro rata


Job Purpose:


To develop a personalised and supportive relationship with a group of Year 10 to Year 13 students

with high academic potential from under represented backgrounds participating in the Villiers Park

Scholars Programme. The programme objective is to maximise their academic potential, enabling

them to gain access to a leading university or other centre of excellence and to have developed the

life and study skills needed to thrive once there.

Line Management:


Regional Scholars Programme Manager

Core Responsibilities:


 *  To develop one-to-one mentoring relationships with students identified as Scholars, meeting them on

a regular basis to discuss progress according to termly objectives

 *  To set realistic targets and implement strategies that reflect Scholars' abilities, strengths and stretches,

with the objective of raising attainment, aspirations and self-esteem

 *  To develop, organise and attend cross-phase Scholar and peer group meetings

 *  To record and monitor the progress of Scholars and to liaise with teachers on a termly basis to ensure

that school/college and Scholars Programme progress are compatible

 *  To maintain clear and consistent expectations of Scholars whilst in school/college or attending

outreach activities

 *  To help develop, organise and attend outreach activities that are part of the Scholars Programme,

ensuring students routinely access these events

 *  To participate in training and the sharing of best practice opportunities with other Scholars

Programme teams

 *  To undertake other duties which may be necessary to achieve Programme objectives

 

Personal qualities:


 *  Interest in provision for students with high academic potential

 *  Commitment to equality of opportunity among the targeted students

 *  Enthusiasm to engage with young people in the 14-19 age range

 *  Ability to challenge and motivate effectively whilst maintaining good relationships

 *  Receptiveness to continuing professional development and the sharing of expertise


Skills:


 *  Ability to work effectively both in a team and independently

 *  Good communication skills across a range of audiences in addition to the contact with Scholars, to

include report writing, liaison with school staff, presentations

 *  Ability to assess Scholar needs and monitor progress

 *  Literacy including computer literacy, numeracy, and sound time management


Knowledge and Experience:


 *  An understanding of how schools/colleges operate and an awareness of national 14-19 educational

issues

 *  An awareness of current issues concerning applications and attendance at university, ideally with

recent personal experience of studying or working at a university

 *  Experience of one-to-one peer support or mentoring

 *  Experience of organising group activities and using time efficiently to plan and manage programmes of

the highest quality


Other criteria:


 *  Minimum qualifications at level 3 (A-level) but with degree level study strongly favoured

 *  Driving licence and own transport (car)

 *  Able to accompany and supervise individuals and groups of Scholars on residential and local activities*

 *  Some flexibility in working hours to suit the post requirements
