Dealing with hay fever at work

hay fever

Itchy eyes, scratchy throat, non-stop sneezing…it can only mean one thing- hay fever season.

Hay fever affects around 13 million people in the UK and is one of the most common allergies that people suffer from. Often dismissed as a minor ailment, it can make sufferers’ lives a misery in the summer months especially at work.

So, what can you do to stop hay fever interfering with your job?

Be prepared

Check pollen counts for the week ahead and try to anticipate when your hay fever might be at its worst. Keep your home and workplace as clean and dust free as possible, as this can aggravate symptoms.

Stock up on medication

Always have some tissues and medication on hand at work in case you need it. Whether you take a decongestant, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory drug, the last thing you want is to run out before that big meeting!

Take a day off if you need it

If your symptoms are severe, then there’s no shame in calling in sick or asking to work from home.

Speak to your doctor

If your hay fever is regularly impacting on your work performance, or other aspects of your life, then speak to your doctor. They may be able to offer you alternative treatments or stronger medication.
