Full Job Description

We are seeking to recruit a dynamic, passionate and suitably experienced Attendance and Welfare Officer to join our academy. Welbeck Academy is committed to providing the best education possible for all children at our school. We place high priority on school attendance as a means of ensuring that all pupils at our school can access all of the educational opportunities available to them. We value the impact that high attendance levels have on supporting the development of our pupils' academic, emotional, social and behavioural needs so that they leave our school stage-ready and well equipped for a successful future.

The successful applicant will:

  • Ensure daily attendance registers are accurate and complete, and follow up with staff members about any incomplete data.

  • Follow up on any unexplained absences with parents/carers, escalating issues as appropriate in line with school procedures. Initiate and oversee the administration of absence procedures, for example letters home, attendance clinics and engagement with local authorities/other external agencies and partners

  • Manage attendance returns for the school census

  • Issue parenting contracts and manage referral processes for issuing penalty notices to parents

  • Prepare and submit reports to the Local Authority to ensure the timely follow up of statutory duties. This includes providing witness statements for court when requested

  • Maintain accurate records of communications with parents/carers and evidence of relevant interventions

  • Build and refresh knowledge of the school's MIS and other relevant systems

  • Keep up to date with developments in local and national guidance related to improving school attendance

  • Produce and interpret attendance reports for school leaders, identifying key statistics, reasons for absence and any patterns of concern

  • Track attendance of vulnerable groups of pupils, including persistent and severe absentees and share information with school leaders

  • Identify pupils that need additional support to improve their attendance and/or punctuality

  • Work with school leaders to identify appropriate interventions to improve attendance for particular groups or individual pupils

  • Lead daily or weekly check-ins to review progress and the impact of support/interventions

  • Work with school leaders to develop and revise the school's attendance policy

  • Implement children missing education (CME) procedures when appropriate

  • Provide regular reports to attendance organisations to raise awareness of emerging at-risk pupils

  • Working with parents/carers/pupils
