Full Job Description

This project will provide greater understanding of environmental impacts on business operations and will enable McClures to put in place measures to reduce carbon emissions, increase efficiencies and contribute positively to the preservation of Cumbria's natural environment. This internship will involve the following activities:

  • Working alongside the company to understand their business structure, operations and customers

  • Analyse available data, such as energy usage, transport routes and customer locations

  • Calculate a carbon footprint for current operations

  • Provide recommendations which could reduce this carbon footprint

  • Present these findings to the Beneficiary and provide an evidence-based list of practical recommendations, including any financial and cultural considerations

    The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Have a good understanding of carbon accounting

  • Be comfortable handling data

  • Be self-motivated, organised and a problem-solver

  • Be available to work over summer 2024 and visit the site (Windermere, Cumbria)

    W.McClures Ltd is a family run wholesaler based in Windermere, Cumbria, which delivers food produce to customers across a 70-mile radius. Produce includes fresh, ambient and frozen food and ingredients and is largely delivered to the catering industry. McClures operates a fleet of vehicles capable of maintaining various temperatures to keep the produce as fresh as possible during delivery, for example ambient, chilled and frozen.


  • As part of the company's ongoing sustainability efforts, McClures is eager to undertake a comprehensive analysis of carbon emissions throughout business operations. The successful intern will produce a carbon assessment and analysis as well as recommendations on how the business can reduce its carbon footprint across operations. This internship will run over summer 2024 and there is a total of 130 hours available.
