Full Job Description

  • Quarterly Board Meetings

  • Annual Performance Reviews of Directors (maximum 12)

  • Annual Performance Review of CEO and support

  • Development Days (two half days per year)

  • Ad Hoc Events and Trafford Council Strategy Partnership Meetings (where possible)


  • The minimum commitment is 3 years, and this can be extended to a maximum of nine years through two additional 3-year terms before leaving. The role of Chair requires an estimated commitment of roughly 1 day per month.

    The chair role is a voluntary role, Trafford Leisure will reimburse any reasonable expenses incurred whilst carrying out role and the rules around expenses would be discussed and agreed on appointment. The chair, like our other Non-Executive Directors and people will also receive a complimentary membership to all our Trafford Leisure Facilities saving you up to £450 a year.

Our new Chair will be an independent and strategic thinker, experienced in leading and motivating others through periods of change. With a collaborative approach, you will bring an excellent understanding of good governance, sound judgement, and be comfortable navigating a complex environment. You'll bring high levels of integrity, probity, and an aptitude for corporate governance. Executive or Non-Executive experience in a similar/comparable sector or organisation (See equalities below). The Chair will be a first-class communicator and ambassador for Trafford Leisure, building relationships and advocating for us and our work.

    We are the largest operator of sport and leisure facilities in Trafford with an annual turnover of £8million and employing over 300 people. Our bold vision is to "Inspire and create opportunities for the people of Trafford to move more and live longer, healthier, happier lives" We work to reduce health inequalities across the Trafford area, and, to inspire people to move more every day. We now have an exciting opportunity to recruit a new chair who shares our vision and will support us in building a strong and sustainable organization.

    This is a pivotal point in our evolution as Trafford Council multi-million-pound leisure investment programme is rolled out. This ambitious programme will see the portfolio of Leisure centres transformed into fit for purpose, accessible, inspiring spaces under a new brand of "move" for future generations to come. A partnership philosophy underpins all that we do and drives our success. Trafford Leisure works collaboratively with the Council, our stakeholders across sport and health, and the boroughs diverse community and voluntary sector to deliver the outcomes of Trafford's Sport and Physical Activity Strategy Trafford Moving Strategy.

    Trafford Leisure is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring we operate to the highest standards of governance and in doing so have developed a two-year plan which will see us comply with all requirements of a Tier Three Sport England organisation.

    The term for our existing Chair, Andy Worthington OBE, will come to an end in September of this year after an amazing continuous 9 years' service to the Trafford Leisure Board. In turn, we are now seeking a new Chair who will lead the Board, continue to foster the relationship with Trafford Council and other key stakeholders and work closely with our CEO and other members of the Exec team to ensure delivery of our vision, effectiveness and good governance across this CIC, Trafford Leisure employs a team of over 500 friendly, fully qualified staff who can ensure that whatever your leisure goal, you can achieve it in an enjoyable way. Trafford Leisure is all about, 'More People, More Active, More Often' and with the vast array of leisure activities we provide we have something to offer everyone from toddlers through to seniors to achieve this.

    Trafford Leisure currently operates the major leisure facilities in Trafford, and is a non-profit distributing organisation, meaning any surplus that is generated is reinvested back into the facilities it operates. This reinvestment allows the company and the facilities to constantly grow and improve to the benefit of our users.
