Full Job Description

Due to increased business, we are looking to recruit Senior/Principal Place Economics Consultants. You will work on a wide range of projects in many sectors, preparing economic and socioeconomic impact assessments and undertaking evidence reviews, data analysis, stakeholder interviews and engagement. You'll develop both qualitative and quantitative research tools as well as further develop our existing models. In addition to this, you will respond to client briefs, work with clients, and manage projects both effectively and profitably.
Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Manage and deliver projects and deliverables

  • Produce reports, action plans and presentations

  • Develop economic and financial appraisals.

  • Work on a broad range of five-case-business-cases and related feasibility studies and impact assessments.

  • Provide economic development advice verbally and via reports to clients

    You have both a personal and professional interest in economic, social and spatial development with an enthusiasm to work in a collaborative team environment for a range of public and private sector clients. You've previously worked in similar roles, most likely within a multi-disciplinary consultancy or the public sector.     A degree in Economics, Economic Development, Finance, Social Science, Geography or a related discipline

  • Experience working in a commercial environment

  • Experience delivering impact assessments, economic and financial appraisal and project evaluation

  • Familiarity with HM Treasury Green Book and five-case business cases.

    About the business unit
    The Buildings and Cities Unit (BNC) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.
    About the team
    This role sits within the Cities Studio team which forms part of the Building and Cities Unit. Cities Studio provides integrated and deliverable urban development solutions that enables people and places to thrive.
    Place Economists are an integral part of Cities Studio. They work alongside town planners and urban designers to provide public and private sector clients with business cases, masterplanning and placemaking services across the UK and internationally for their development schemes.
    This role is being created to support the rapid development of Cities Studio and provide greater senior level economist staff capacity to respond to existing client requirements and emerging opportunities and expand technical resource capacity.
    Cities Studio undertakes projects spanning a range of complex urban contexts including:
  • Town centre and urban regeneration,

  • Transport hubs and transit orientated development,

  • Mixed use urban quarters and neighbourhoods.

  • 'Campus'-style developments, such as around healthcare and education facilities.


  • Significant career development opportunities will be available including involvement in a diverse portfolio of project work including development of analytical and delivery focused skills. There will be opportunities to progress to more senior economist roles offering greater levels of responsibility.
