Full Job Description

This role forms part of the frontline of a multi-disciplinary team, working with children and adolescents experiencing a crisis, within the borders of Hertfordshire. You will provide specialist assessments, follow ups and short-term interventions for young people aged under 18 suffering from acute and complex emotional, behavioural, and psychological crisis.

C-CATT is a community-based team but also provides acute assessments for young people who present in a mental health crisis to the Emergency Departments at Lister and Watford General Hospitals.

C-CATT is a 24/7 service, and the role involves a varied shift pattern with the inclusion of unsocial hours of work. Night shifts are a requirement of the role as is weekend work., We are looking for experienced clinicians, RMNs, RN's and Social Workers to join our expanding service. Our clinicians provide crisis telephone line support, triage and assessment as well as face to face assessments, follow ups and brief interventions in the community. Most referrals currently come from the two A&E's in Hertfordshire, although with our new crisis telephone line we are trying to prevent anyone attending A&E if they do not have a physical need to be there. The C-CATT service operates 24/7, this role will involve day, evening, night and weekend working.

Additional positions, at same banding are available during week day 9-5, or condensed hours 8-6 over 4 days, with scope for some weekend work., Provide specialist assessments and treatment packages for young people referred to the service.

Maintain effective joint working with the CAMHS Quadrants and other community-based teams according to local circumstances.

Provide emergency assessments to young people presenting at A & E or admitted to a pediatric ward and are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Provide community assessments and 7-day community follow ups.

Provide community intervention packages (e.g., at the client's home, school and surrounding area, or alternative appropriate locations).

Provide triage and support to families via the C-CATT Crisis telephone line.

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Provide support and advice to partner agencies (such as school staff, CSF, YC Herts).

Ensure smooth and seamless transfer of care to other agencies for ongoing support for the young person.

Provide Health Promotion and advise (including sexual health).

Assess and monitor mental state of young people.

Ensure timely, accurate and professional assessment of risks using a biopsychosocial method of assessment.

Ensure clinical notes are accurately entered upon the young person's EPR.

Maintain one's own professional registration and development.

Effectively manage all aspects of own time i.e., Duty Rota, time worked and annual leave.

As well as a relevant professional qualification we are looking for people who are:

  • Knowledge of Mental Health problems that affect young people

  • An ability to work with Children and Young People in challenging situations.


  • A car driver is an essential element to the role (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010 which prevents you from driving).,
  • Degree or Diploma in Mental Health Nursing /Social Work

  • Up-to-date professional registration

  • Evidence of further professional development/ training, Experience of working in Mental Health and knowledge of mental health problems

  • Experience of working in CAMHS

  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act and Children's Act

  • Knowledge of Child Protection issues

  • Experience of using evidence based crisis interventions with young people, Ability to keep up-to-date records and reports

  • Ability to produce written and verbal reports for external agencies

  • Ability to provide verbal feedback to team
