Full Job Description

As a Confined Space Permit Controller, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will be working on state-of-the-art military platforms, supporting the Commissioning Group and production teams to ensure that maintenance programs can be conducted safety and to the project plan.

This is a critical role to ensure safe systems of work are adhered to and ensuring all confined spaces are safe to work in and all risks are mitigated.

Day-to-day, you'll play an integral part of the control of tanks and confined spaces on submarine platforms at Devonport Royal Dockyard in accordance with legislative and company policy requirements.

You will interact with sub-contractors, ships staff and production teams to provide advice, ensure adequate controls are in place and record all aspects of work within confined spaces across the submarine business unit.

  • Acting as focal point for all confined space work activities within area of responsibility.

  • Ensuring that the confined spaces Safe System of Work (SSoW) is in place, maintained and complied with, issue Permit to Work (PTW) for confined spaces.

  • Ensuring correct, valid entry certificates or tags for confined spaces are in place and displayed correctly within confined space entry boards.

  • Ensuring all services in the space are working and are correct for the task being undertaken, i.e. ventilation and lights.

  • Ensuring atmospheric testing of a confined space has been carried out and a valid clearance certificate has been issued by a competent analyst prior to authorisation of work in the space.


  • This position involves working in confined spaces. Candidates must be able to work comfortably and perform tasks in restricted spaces.

    This role is full time 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

    Essential experience of the Confined Space Permit Controller
  • Knowledge and experience of working in tanks and confined spaces - Beneficial

  • Knowledge and experience of running a Safe System of Work (SSoW) - Beneficial

  • Sound and demonstrable knowledge of confined space control requirements and standards - Beneficial

  • Ability to communicate and interface with multiple stakeholders in a professional manner.

  • A Basic knowledge/understanding of Health and Safety


  • Qualifications for the Confined Space Permit Controller
  • IOSH Managing Safely - Desirable

  • Risk Assessor- Desirable

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces - Desirable

  • OPITO Level 1 Authorised Gas Tester (AGT) - Desirable

  • Management and Supervision of Work in Confined Spaces - Desirable
