Full Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and forward-thinking person and are excited to be recruiting a Support Worker to support 2 individuals within our service in Leedstown.

About the Role:

We currently have a great opportunity to work in a supported living service supporting two gentlemen who moved here approximately 14mths ago. We need a new staff member to work alongside the team mainly supporting Mr. B to rediscover his zest for life. Mr B is an autistic man in his mid 50's, although he has a good understanding of spoken communication, he uses Makaton signing to make his wishes and preferences known.

Mr B enjoys nothing more than being out and about in his car. He loves a cup of coffee, listening to 80s music and watching the world go by; he enjoys being in the fresh air and is encouraged to enjoy a walk or two with a flask of coffee when the weather is agreeable.

Mr B has lost his enthusiasm for swimming, water sports, gardening and generally being active - we are now working to identify activities that he enjoys and are meaningful to him working closely with health professionals to get this right for him.

Mr B has some obsessive behaviours (did we mention coffee?) that help him to cope with a world that can be confusing, the team are working hard to understand and support Mr B to feel safe - Mr B makes the team work hard for a smile, he needs consistency - (do what you say you will) and someone working on his team to be a positive advocate for him and to provide support during both the good times and the more difficult times. Mr B works well with both men and women but appears to have a preference for male staff who are fun, able to think outside of the box, with a kind and patient personality who are happy to get to know and understand that being autistic is an important part of who Mr B is.

Mr B lives with another gentleman Mr J who is an autistic man in his 30s, the role will include 2 shifts supporting him.

Mr J likes to have space and enjoys being in environments that provide him with sensory feedback - the beach, woodlands, feeling the sun on his face are all positive experiences. Mr J is currently being supported to explore activities that he enjoys, he can find the smallest of changes challenging and the team are being supported to develop an understanding of the triggers to his distressed behaviours; Mr J needs a consistent approach, his sleep pattern and routines are very ad hoc, he requires time to process what is being asked of him and support to develop his Makaton signing. Mr J is massively sensory seeking and lives very much in the 'here and now' and makes his needs and wishes known through vocalisations, the team are being supported to understand a total communication approach, creating a positive environment to support communication and interaction.

We are seeking to recruit a 25hr cover - this person may work across 2 services on occasion, here at our Leedstown service, and also in another PBS service in St Agnes - we require you to have some experience of supporting people with distressed & challenging behaviours.
