Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come., National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) is seeking a Data Scientist to join our Operational Insights team. This team plays a pivotal role in providing value for consumers by producing and reporting key insights from data and information related to ESO Control Room activities.

You will have a unique opportunity to get involved in setting up a new project, including data management and communicating with stakeholders. This project aims to:

  • Provide clear and accessible information to the market explaining Control Room decisions and reasons.

  • Create ESO performance metrics to report on efficiency of economic dispatch.

  • Enable identification and prioritisation of improvements to Control Room tools and processes.


  • That's why you will need to have strong analytical, data science, economic modelling, statistical analysis, or forecasting experience, along with a proven ability to communicate complex ideas and processes in a simple manner.

    This role is based at our Warwick, Wokingham or Glasgow office which has free onsite parking, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home.

  • Building a robust and comprehensive understanding to improve and maintain existing Dispatch Transparency processes.

  • Providing accurate, complete, and up-to-date data.

  • Ensure robust processes and improvement plans are employed for capture of data, fully documented and up to date.

  • Implementing additional reporting based on feedback from the control room and the wider ESO community, including senior management and external stakeholders.

  • Identifying opportunities for iterative improvement of resultant insights.

  • Delivering potential new RRE/metrics which provide a meaningful measure of ESO economic performance (including engagement with Ofgem).

  • You will also support the delivery of innovation projects to deliver and implement cutting-edge techniques to ensure we meet the needs of the industry, and provide support for stakeholder engagement across all areas of Dispatch Performance work.

    We do not expect you to have an energy background. Instead, we are seeking individuals with a genuine passion for learning, coupled with natural professional curiosity and an eagerness to understand the actions taken by the control room. In addition, you will need to demonstrate:


  • Experience in building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Experience in analysing, combining, and modelling large datasets.

  • Self-starting ability, capable of organising and efficiently planning time in a fast-moving environment.

  • Effective communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders., Educated to degree level (or equivalent relevant experience).

    In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.


  • The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users' need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

    The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

    A competitive salary of circa £49,000 -60,000 - dependent on capability.

    As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
