Full Job Description

The Infectious Disease and Microbiology departments in Bristol are seeking a Locum Consultant in Infectious Disease and Microbiology to start as soon as possible. Applicants must be accredited in Infectious Disease with Microbiology

This post is a locum funded for the purposes of extending our successful infection virtual ward service across the whole of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. It will run until at least April 2026.

We are seeking individuals who will bring enthusiasm, teamwork, flexibility and innovation to a growing, rapidly evolving department. Post-holders would be required to work in close partnership with our allied departments and those with academic and educational interests are particularly welcome. There are strong links with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

The successful applicant will be based in the ID department at Southmead Hospital but work across ID and microbiology in the region's different healthcare organisations (including the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital- both run by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS FT). Southmead is the regional centre for major trauma, neurosciences, plastics and burns, orthopaedics and renal services. Microbiology services are delivered by Severn Infection Sciences, a collaboration between the trust and UKHSA. The laboratory is based at Southmead and provides diagnostics services for North Bristol, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust and the Royal United Hospital Trust, Bath.

The Dept of Infectious Disease service comprises 7 consultants delivering care on a dedicated ward and consults to specialities across North Bristol NHS Trust. There are 6 lobbied isolation rooms. We are the regional centre for the inpatient management multi-drug resistant TB and have been commissioned as a high consequence infectious disease centre (HCID, launching in mid-2024). We run outpatient services for all aspects of infection including TB, and travel. The Dept of Microbiology comprises 9 consultants delivering diagnostic and consult microbiology services across NBT and at Weston General Hospital, including involvement in a number of specialist MDTs. In addition there are 3 virology and 2 mycology consultants based in Infection Sciences.

Recently named the best place to live in the UK by the Sunday Times ("cool, classy and supremely creative"), Bristol is a vibrant city with a rich maritime history. Famed for bridges, balloons, boats and Banksy, there are also great schools, theatres, zoos, a diverse food and drink scene, museums, beautiful parks and stunning architecture. Somerset, the Southwest coast and Bristol Airport are minutes away and there are fast transport links to Wales and London.

The appointee's job plan will involve covering the ID on call rota, ward, clinics and microbiology services across the different sites. The on-call has a 1 in 6 weekend/bank holiday ward round and consults commitment and a requirement to be available for out of hours telephone advice when on call. The rota will include HCID patients when launched later in the year which may require attendance at site out of hours at short notice. There is no involvement in acute medical on call, nor the microbiology on call service
