Forestry England is the body responsible for managing over 1500 sites that make up the Nation's Forests; the largest single landholding in the country with over 200 million visits a year.

The Corporate Affairs Division (CAD) functions are vital to ensuring Forestry England's operations are viewed as trusted, robust, transparent and compliant. Division functions include: CEO office, strategy, natural capital, policy, governance, risk, compliance, performance, insight and knowledge information. This role reports to the Corporate Director.

KIM provides a key expertise in the critical role information plays in Forestry England and Forestry Commission. The function has a dual focus and leads on cross-Forestry Commission information strategy and policy as well as having lead operational responsibility for delivery in Forestry England for implementing information based management, rights and security.

Purpose:

The role of Information and Data Governance Lead provides a unique challenge and opportunity for an individual interested in driving and shaping the evolution of a knowledge and information service. This is an opportunity to work with a wide range of individuals and multi-disciplinary teams based in locations across England.

This role is for an experienced manager and information & data governance professional. You will provide expert leadership, strategic vision, advice and guidance to the organisation on data and information governance to ensure that the organisation is compliant, effective and efficient in its management of its information across the public, commercial and marketing areas in which the organisation operates. The post holder and KIM experts you lead will advise on the benefits, risks, requirements and opportunities of information management, governance and rights are understood, communicated and considered in system implementations and across the organisation. The role will work closely and collaboratively with the Forestry Commissioner's Office, Forestry England's Executive Team and across the districts to develop and embed a working strategy for managing information to be effective and compliant.

You have operational responsibility for information management and data protection compliance across Forestry England. You lead on the development of a data strategy and the governance around our data. You hold additional responsibility at Forestry Commission level for leading on policy in collaboration with KIM professionals across the FC.,

  • KIM lead expert with practical knowledge and operational experience of managing information and information rights in a complex, dispersed, multi-disciplinary organisation

  • Policy lead for information management across Forestry Commission working alongside the Forestry Commission Information Rights Lead

  • Building and developing relationships with KIM professionals across the Forestry Commission and a range of stakeholders and key networks.

  • Team management and development, this role is a key leadership role in the corporate team unit, including building the matrix management approach under the governance and risk theme.

  • Contribute to the development of the Corporate Affairs annual business plan ensuring financial and staff resources are accounted for.


  • Expert
  • Forestry Commission Departmental Records Officer and responsible for relationship with the National Archives on public records management. Compliance and meeting our legal obligations under information legislation including FOI, DP, PRA, EIR, Re-use of Public Sector Information regulations.

  • Lead on information security providing advice and guidance, supporting incident investigations

  • Lead the approach to information risk management, and be a member of the Forestry Commission Security Management Risk Forum.

  • Lead the provision of advice to Forestry England's Chief Exec and Executive Team on their obligations under data protection legislation.


  • Deliver
  • Strategic development and Operational delivery lead for Information Governance across Forestry England.

  • Delivering key strategic information programmes, such as the Data Strategy through to successful co-ordination and completion across the Forestry Commission

  • Develop strong partnership working with key teams such as IT colleagues and understand relationship of IT applications in relation to information governance e.g. SharePoint, MS Teams, One Drive

  • Take a key role in the digital first approach in the organisation

  • Play an active role in using knowledge management for effective succession planning and business continuity planning.

  • Deliver SLA KIM services provided to Forestry Commission from Forestry England.

  • Develop and maintain a national archive for the Forestry Commission.

  • Developing training and awareness to improve the information governance and risk culture including data protection, privacy, information rights, information risk awareness and information request handling., A CV setting out your career history, with key responsibilities and achievements.     Educated to degree level or have substantial experience in the field of knowledge and information management.


  • Practitioner certificate in FoI management or willingness to obtain it within 3 months of beginning role.

    A deep experience knowledge and information management in a leadership role.

    Knowledge of relevant UK legislation and public duty requirements for information management.

    Experience of the development and successful delivery of strategies, policies and practice to drive and deliver change.

    Experience of supporting the delivery of programmes of work in an environment of organisational transition and change.

    Demonstrate a track record of developing successful working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

    Evidence of constantly updating knowledge and skills so they are current with awareness of current developments, emerging themes and requirements.

    Willingness to travel in the UK and some overnight stays will be required.
