Full Job Description

As part of a small but inclusive multi-disciplinary legal team and working alongside a senior legal officer you will be making a key contribution to how the council delivers change across the district of South Gloucestershire.

This role has a primary focus on preparing and delivering the Statutory Orders necessary to support the vision of change that the council has for the district as part of a range of major infrastructure projects. In addition you will have the opportunity to gain experience across a very broad, cross cutting portfolio of day-to-day work, including the land and property elements of major developments and infrastructure projects with projects as varied as school academisations and the delivery of affordable housing schemes, contributing to the delivery of the Council's key objectives.

What will you be doing?

  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and with your own caseload you will undertaking all relevant legal and administrative tasks (including preparation, drafting, consultation and publication) relating to the preparation of Statutory Orders (Traffic Regulation Orders, Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders and Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders).

  • You will have the opportunity to assist with the land and property work of the Place team, providing legal advice and assistance in relation to all broadly based property transactional work including freehold and leasehold conveyancing, landlord and tenant, sales and purchases, leases, licences, assignments, easements & wayleaves, registrations of title, registration (and removal) of charges and restrictions at HMLR, returns to HMRC together with drafting and negotiation as necessary.

  • On a daily basis you will work closely with and support colleagues in other teams across the Council on collaborative projects and initiatives.

  • Ongoing personal development is key and you will be developing your existing legal skills and competencies and taking responsibility for your learning, whilst ensuring that tasks are completed correctly and to time.

    It is essential that you are educated to degree level with a Law degree or appropriate post graduate qualification or Legal Practice Certificate

  • We require you to have experience as a paralegal or legal executive, ideally in a Local Authority setting or of working in a legal practice environment

  • It is key that you are able to work as part of a team, under pressure and within tight timescales.

  • You should have the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, clients and all other relevant parties.

  • It is essential that you have excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent organisational and IT skills.

  • It is desirable that you have knowledge of local government law and practice.
