Full Job Description

As a Maintenance Operative, the main priorities of your role are to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life by delivering home and garden maintenance services to customers in our local communities. To observe and promote clients' choice, independence, dignity and privacy. To complete home and garden maintenance tasks as requested whilst observing Health and Safety regulations, being aware of risk assessments and utilising safety equipment provided. To interact with clients in a respectful, inclusive, and empowering manner showing empathy and understanding to all and being an ambassador for Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors services and values.

The main responsibilities of the role are:

  • To visit customers' homes using transport provided by Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors wearing appropriate workwear and ID at all times.

  • Promote and deliver services in a way which is sensitive and responsive to client needs.

  • To carry out home maintenance and household repairs efficiently and to a high standard, including the installation of home security and safety measures, handrails and grabrails and any other general maintenance tasks including PAT testing.

  • To carry out painting and decorating both internal and external.

  • Maintain the company vehicle in good, clean order, making any appropriate checks on a regular basis, e.g. tyre pressures. Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the vehicle in terms of driving, care and security.

  • To provide where applicable, an estimate of the value of materials and length of time required to complete the work and place the necessary order with suppliers.

  • On completion of works, completing all relevant paperwork and returning to client and/or manager including receipt and collection of payments when necessary.

  • Accurate entering of data onto online applications and use of company system.

  • Adhere to Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors Policies and procedures including the Health and Safety policy and related policies mentioned therein.

  • Where applicable, ensure project activities are risk assessed in line with the organisations Health and Safety policies and procedures.

  • Immediate Reporting of incidents and accidents including Safeguarding issues in line with organisational procedures.

  • Immediately report any changes or concerns about clients including 'no reply' situations.

  • Have a basic awareness of the range of services offered by Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors and signpost clients to appropriate services as required.

  • Undergo mandatory and departmental training as required and integrate it into your work programme.

    As a Maintenance Operative, we will require a DBS check prior to you commencing volunteering with us. We also look for the following skills and qualities:


  • Essential:
  • Proven decorating skills.

  • Practical knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry and other DIY-type skills.

  • Ability to manage own time and complete tasks in an efficient manner.

  • Ability to complete tasks in a clean and tidy manner.

  • Able to demonstrate respect for elderly and vulnerable clients.

  • Able to demonstrate reassuring nature when dealing with nervous clients.

  • To be an ambassador for Age UK North Yorkshire Coast and Moors and all its services whilst out and about in the community.

  • Able to transport themselves around the Borough of Scarborough and the whole district of Ryedale.

  • Able to undertake gardening work that will include use of electrical and fuel powered tools.


  • Desirable:
  • Experience of working with older people.

  • Experience of using MS Office.
