Full Job Description

The Mechanical and Electrical Locking Team are a national team responsible for the maintenance, repair and refurbishment of 385 mechanical signal boxes 370 ground frames and associated equipment across the rail network, from Wick to Cornwall.

As you would probably expect from such unique equipment, there are very few parts that can just be bought off the shelf. Many of our replacement parts are recovered items which are refurbished in- house by our team.

It takes a wide range of unique and highly skilled expertise to sustain this function. Whilst we are predominately known for our expertise in mechanical signalling our wide skills base means that we also carry out works for other parts of the business as requested.

We are now seeking a Mechanical & Electrical Locking Engineer, to lead and direct the Mechanical and Electrical Locking and Testing team on behalf of the Region & Route in the delivery of safe and effective maintenance and renewals of all locking assets in areas of responsibility.

About the role (External)

Key Accountabilities

1. Lead and direct the Mechanical and Electrical Locking and Testing team on behalf of the Region & Route in the safe delivery of assessment, maintenance, inspection, renewal, repair, overhaul, testing and commissioning of both mechanical and electrical locking systems and other signalling assets as directed, whilst complying with safety, quality and environmental standards.

2. Provide planning resources and support for all mechanical and electrical locking maintenance / complimentary works in liaison with MDUMs.

3. Carry out audits of staff, resources and assets to assess compliance to Company and Group Standards.

4. Assist the Locking Programme Manager in the compilation of Regional, Route and Complimentary Works budgets for assets in sphere of responsibility and manage the delivery of budgets when approved.

5. Develop and implement a dated and resourced M&E locking overhaul and renewal plan, prioritising assets on a safe and useful life basis.

6. Effective provision of rapid response to Route M&E locking faults and equipment failure as required by MDUMs.

7. Create and maintain minor stocking points to source items required for effective locking asset maintenance.

8. Manage the training and support of staff in the competencies required to test, renew, modify and commission locking equipment and other signalling assets as appropriate.

9. Manage the process for M&E locking fitter workplace assessments in accordance with the Company and Group Standards. Identify arising training needs, providing support and guidance as necessary.

10. Timely provision and review of relevant reports and plans.

• Relevant Railway Signalling experience

• Relevant Mechanical and Electrical Locking experience

• Signal Maintenance Testing including locking elements

• A1 Workplace Assessment

• Good working knowledge of a variety of level frame types and the different forms of
mechanical locking in use

• Six Sigma Yellow Belt
