Full Job Description

We are looking for skilled individuals with experience in winning, delivering and managing transport economics/planning projects involving social and economic appraisal, business case development and cost benefit analysis. You will work part of a wider multi-disciplinary team analysing and appraising the impact of transport and development schemes and preparing business cases to justify investment.

The Principal Transport Economist will undertake research and analysis to inform transport related policy decisions, develop transport sector/sub sector strategies (urban transport, rail, roads, aviation, ports, logistics etc), undertake social and economic assessments of systems, projects and programs, support wider transport planning projects and provide advice on the economic and financial impacts of transport and logistics projects, policies and initiatives.

About You: Technical Skills

  • Qualification in a relevant discipline - Economics, Transport Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering or similar

  • Business case development experience in line with HM Treasury Green Book

  • A track record of working in a transport economics consultancy environment

  • In-depth understanding of governmental transport/logistics related appraisal and funding, inc transport/land use integration, cost-benefit analysis and business case development

  • Transport scheme appraisal (evaluation, prioritisation) inc TAG and wider appraisal guidance


  • About You: Consultancy Skills
  • Excellent communication skills in writing reports, preparing concept notes, and terms of reference, and delivering presentations to a high standard

  • A track record for developing client relationships, pursuing consultancy opportunities and winning interesting work

  • Proficiency in the use of analytical tools for data analysis, modelling and interpretation, including Microsoft Office

  • Willing to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with the ability to coordinate, assist and support team members, as well as ability to work independently

  • Strong analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work under pressure to deliver quality work whilst respecting time and budget constraints

  • Relationships with key sector clients such as DfT, Network Rail, ORR, TfL, TfN, Combined Authorities, regional transport bodies and/or logistics sector key players.

  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies.

  • International experience in established and/or emerging markets.
