What you'll be responsible for

We do everything we can to make sure that our networks run smoothly around the clock. Sometimes, events happen that are outside of our control, and this is when our Response Pod Team will really make a positive impact to the service we deliver to our customers.

As a Response Pod Technician you will respond to any issues which have the potential to impact customer supplies, water quality, or require urgent response.

You will support inspectors and contractors in our supply chain to solve issues as quickly and effectively as possible. You'll work alongside other technicians and inspectors supported by the wider team within Water to deliver the best possible outcome in any event.

Every day will be different, exciting (and sometimes challenging!). You'll carry out tasks such as meeting customers and investigating issues, finding and resolving network faults, using temporary means to restore water supplies, and operating the water network to enable repairs to be carried out.

You'll play a key role in ensuring that we maintain the highest possible standards around safety and water quality at all times.

Key duties include :

Support the Response Pod Team in delivering an efficient and effective 24 / 7 service with no avoidable failures in service delivery.

You'll act as the senior on-site lead for inspectors and contractors, providing direction and coordination and ensuring that issues are escalated when required.

Respond to issues as directed by Operational Response and Operational Control Teams, providing regular feedback to ensure that risks are understood, and customers are kept up to date with progress throughout our response.

You'll be responding to a wide variety of issues ranging from single customer contacts to major failures of large diameter water mains.

You'll be responsible for investigating, pinpointing the fault, and taking action to resolve the issue.

  • Provide service to customers directly in response to urgent issues and ensure that customers are fully informed about what happens next.

  • Take a lead in ensuring that all vehicles, plant, and equipment are adequately maintained and ready to deploy at all times, with particular focus on maintaining of compliance with Water Quality and Safety standards expected.


  • You will be responsible for ensuring that activities are undertaken in time and coordinating colleagues around you.
  • Utilise all emergency response equipment available to restore supplies as quickly as possible in the event of failures, whilst ensuring that water quality is not compromised.

  • Liaise with contractors in our supply chain to ensure efficient coordination of the deployment of people, vehicles, and equipment during larger events.

  • Recording all activities in the relevant corporate systems (SAP, PowerApps, Procedural Forms) to ensure that there is an auditable record of our actions.

  • Carry out and document on-site Risk Assessments to ensure that hazards are identified, and risks mitigated or reduced as far as possible

    We are seeking candidates who demonstrate the below skills, experience and behaviours :

  • BTEC / equivalent qualification or suitable demonstrable experience in Water Operations

  • A minimum of 3 years experience working in a front-line or technical role in the Water, Utility or Logistics sectors.

  • Experience in taking a lead amongst peers and able to demonstrate examples where others have looked to you for guidance, support, and direction

  • Experience with reactive logistic operations and an understanding of water / wastewater operations

  • Experience in working to stringent Health and Safety procedures and regulatory targets / constraints, and a proven track record in delivering to high standards and levels of compliance

  • Experience in taking a lead during time critical events and providing direction / coordination to others

  • Demonstrable experience in working with contractors to deliver high standards of safety compliance and performance

  • Enthusiastic about putting our customers first every day

  • A good understanding of water service delivery processes and measures of success

  • Transferable practical skills which will prove beneficial to delivering / coordinating reactive operations, fault finding & operating the water network

  • Ability to problem solve quickly and effectively whilst ensuring that safety is never compromised

  • Able to demonstrate discipline to follow and monitor compliance against procedures with a strong focus on attention to detail

  • Able to demonstrate experience in delivering innovative solutions to solve problems

  • Able to work as part of a team, supporting others and understanding the importance of working together to deliver results

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to deal with customers, colleagues, and external stakeholders in a professional manner, promoting a positive image of Welsh Water at all times

  • Evident drive for results demonstrates interest and ability to learn new things, takes initiative, welcomes problems as challenges, finds solutions to problems

  • Competent in the use of IT

    You'll participate in an annualised hours shift team, working a 24 / 7 / 365 shift rota. The shift rota gives great work / life balance, and you will be rewarded with ample rest days and an annualised shift allowance in addition to your salary.


  • The Response Pod Technicians will work a 24 / 7 shift pattern with 12-hour shifts, typically 4 on 4 off, with 2 early shifts (6am - 6pm) followed by 2 late shifts (6pm - 6am).
