Full Job Description

Senior Academic Reps represent students within their subject or discipline. They focus on issues relating to teaching, learning, academic quality, and the general academic welfare of students. Their role is to pass wider issues from Course Reps to School-level committees. They also help run campaigns and projects to improve your academic university experience.

We are currently in the process of re-structuring the Representation system with the aim that every student studying at Bath Spa will feel part of a community of learners and have the confidence to succeed.

For this Academic year, there will be two out of the seven schools participating in a pilot. These Schools are as follows: Bath Business School and Bath School of Music and Performing Arts. Both will begin the year with the recruitment of a newly developed role, "Student Community Champions", replacing the role of Senior Academic Rep. For non-pilot schools, there will be a maximum of three Undergraduate positions available to represent each school.

There will be one Postgraduate Taught Senior Academic Rep per school and two PGCE Senior Academic Reps. For Postgraduate Research students, there will be one to represent the entire cohort.

All positions will be advertised, and applicants will be subject to submitting an application and interview process., Location: Your home campus (with some training, meetings, and events elsewhere or online) Time Commitment: 2-4 hours a week, term time only

How long will I be a Rep? The role lasts for one academic year, though you may decide to run for the position again next year if you are still a student.

You should run for this role if you want...

  • To take an active role in ensuring the best possible educational experience for students in their discipline

  • To take an active role in helping to ensure that the Academic Representation System at Bath Spa is running optimally

  • To represent students' views at University committees and meetings to create the best experience for students,

  • To have direct input into the way in which the University approaches course delivery and strategy for your school., To liaise with student representatives, Union and University staff, and students on affairs that affect the undergraduate academic experience in your school

  • To act as a point of contact for other roles within the Academic Rep System including Course Reps, Vice President Education and Students' Union staff

  • To make yourself known to Course Reps and undergraduate students in your school to ensure that student feedback is shared with relevant school staff

  • To liaise with and develop productive working relationships with key staff in your school

  • To prepare reports and represent undergraduate students at School Quality Management Committee (SQMC) and other relevant meetings

  • To log your attendance and time spent on key tasks with Students' Union staff

  • To chair school roundtables with Course Reps in your school, creating an agenda as you see fit

  • To work with other Students' Union representatives and University staff members through the Senior Academic Rep action group and Student Representative Forum

  • To set aside time each week to respond to enquiries - monitoring both your own email inbox and Unitu.

  • To produce a termly report for Students' Union providing an overview of your work and any issues or areas of good practice


  • Training & Opportunities:
  • All Senior Academic Reps are required to attend an introductory training session, including a handover with the previous Senior Academic Rep as well as specialised training sessions on specific role responsibilities throughout the academic year

  • The Students' Union will run additional training sessions throughout the year. These are optional but will give you opportunities to develop your skills and enhance your CV, and attendance will be logged in your overall hours

  • As a Senior Academic Rep, you will often be invited to take up additional opportunities, such as contributing to University-wide meetings and processes and contributing to the Union's promotional activities


  • Support:
  • Senior Academic Reps have direct support from the Vice President Education and the Students' Union representation team. You will be supported by academic staff in your school and you are also encouraged to offer peer support to your fellow Senior Academic Reps


  • Benefits & Remuneration:
  • You will develop many transferable skills such as communication and time management - the more you engage with the role, the more opportunities and skills you will develop. These skills can be presented to future employers through CVs, personal statements and interviews

  • Networking with a variety of people from different areas of expertise

  • To consult postgraduate students on their university experience and feedback to the University and Students' Union

  • To act as the point of contact for postgraduate research students

  • To liaise with the VP Education, Postgraduate Senior Academic Reps, Students' Union staff

  • To liaise with and develop key contacts with Graduate School staff and relevant University staff

  • To work with other Students' Union representatives through the Senior Academic Rep action group and Student Representative Forum.

  • To attend all meetings with your remit, and to log your attendance with the Students' Union

  • To take an active role in projects that seek to improve the postgraduate research student experience such as the development of the postgraduate representation system and improvements to induction and support activities.

  • To foster the community of postgraduate research students at Bath Spa, by playing an active role in social activities and extracurricular events where appropriate.

    Eligibility and payment

    Those studying at the Bath campuses and are students next academic year are eligible for this role.

    The Students' Union is ongoing an exciting review of its representation system, so this is your chance to help us shape your academic community!

    Senior Academic Reps is currently a voluntary role however, each Rep is entitled to a £100 responsibility allowance per term., We are looking for three Undergraduate students studying in Bath School of Music and Performing Arts to become our new Student Community Champions!

    This is a brand-new role, introduced as part of a pilot project, exclusive to Bath School of Music and Performing Arts and Bath Business School.
