Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come. Being a key part of the Publications team, you will work alongside other insight and content experts to ensure we deliver our SSEP publications in line with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), Ofgem's, and our stakeholders' requirements for the SSEP. There will be two high profile publications - a consultation document, which will include a draft plan, and the final plan following the consultation. The role will involve close working across the SSEP team to ensure our publications provide our stakeholders with the necessary information in a way a variety of audiences will understand and want to engage with.

The project is a once in a lifetime opportunity to plan and promote the new energy system that society wants, and the planet needs. The SSEP will influence the spend of billions of pounds of energy infrastructure by laying the foundations to accelerate the UK's transition to Net Zero securely, cost effectively and with early consideration of the environment and people who will house the energy infrastructure. Your role will ensure we convey the plan and what it means for readers clearly, which will be vital to its success.

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.,

  • Develop initial guidance on the look and feel, 'tone', structure and general initial messaging to stakeholders.

  • Review previous publications and research 'best practice' for documents of this type. For multiple different ESO publications that go out during each stage of SSEP, help ensure consistency and clarity across publications.

  • Once the key chapters of the publication have been identified, communicate the overall 'tone of voice' that will be used to the SSEP team, establish best practice, help write the chapters, and ensure consistency across the whole document. This position will be the key overall 'editor in chief' role for the SSEP publications.

  • Lead and assist other content leads within the SSEP and provide appropriate training, where required.

  • Ensure messaging in other related external publications and stakeholder communications reflects our main objectives.

  • Experience of external communications for complex topics and the ability to produce written content that is relevant, clear, and targeted at the right audience in a timely manner

  • Ability to work collaboratively across the SSEP team and ESO to create content for a broad range of stakeholders

  • Experience of working in publication, content marketing or knowledge of digital marketing technologies would be an advantage

  • General working knowledge of, and passion to learn, how the GB energy industry works and how it must evolve to meet the 2050 net zero targets

  • Creativity to consider new ways of engaging with our stakeholders

    As Great Britain's electricity system operator (ESO), we sit at the heart of the electricity system, using our outstanding engineering and commercial expertise to balance electricity supply and demand. Ultimately, we keep the electricity flowing directly to where it's needed, second by second., In Summer of 2024, the ESO will transition to becoming the National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator will be the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain's electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.


  • The ESO, including all of its existing roles, will be at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users' need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

    The organisation will be set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As the ESO are today, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.

    A competitive salary between £50,000 - £65,000 per annum dependent on experience and capability.
