Full Job Description

The Group Environmental Sustainability team (GES) plays a pivotal role in helping the Group to halt and reverse nature loss and reduce the emissions we finance by more than 50 per cent by 2030, supporting the UK's ambition to be net zero by 2050. We work with colleagues across the Group, our customers, Government and the market to support the Group to achieve its ambitious goals.
Within GES we have an exciting opportunity to join our Environmental Sustainability Centre of Excellence as a Senior Manager. You'll be in a specialist team responsible for developing Group positions on environmental sustainability topics and shaping our environmental sustainability targets and ambitions across the Group, including working with our four key systems to help unlock ways of achieving our ambitions.
You'll work with a broad range of colleagues to help us respond optimally to evolving science, guidance, initiatives and external expectations by staying involved with key industry initiatives and bringing insights back to the Group.
What will I be doing?
The Senior Manager must be passionate about environmental sustainability and helping us to build on the progress the Group has made to date on developing ambitions and making progress towards them.
You'll lead cross-Group engagements on the evolution and enhancement to our environmental sustainability targets and ambitions, taking into account emerging guidance and requirements that are evolving at pace. You'll also lead our engagement with several initiatives developing innovative approaches and requirements for environmental sustainability ambitions and use insights to help develop Group positions on key environmental topics.
This role provides a phenomenal opportunity to continue to build on your detailed environmental sustainability knowledge, as well as how it applies to financial services and what we as a Group need to focus on to achieve our ambitions.
In this role you'll need to :

  • Lead the development and verification of environmental sustainability targets and ambitions across the Group, working closely with relevant divisional teams and priority Group systems as an SME as targets and transition plans are developed for the first time and/or revised

  • Work closely with the wider GES team to understand how to address the implications and interdependencies of climate and the nature, adaptation, circular economy and just transition themes

  • Engage, as appropriate, in leading industry initiatives on financed emissions, target setting and portfolio alignment (e.g., PCAF, GFANZ, NZBA, SBTi, etc.)

  • Build and maintain your environmental sustainability knowledge and how sustainability issues impact the Group, along with a view of how competitors are progressing

  • Develop Group positions and thought leadership on key environmental topics

  • Build and deliver compelling storyboards to provide updates to senior executives on progress and prioritisation of key activities

Understanding of environmental sustainability issues and their impact on businesses in a number of sectors

  • Knowledge of environmental target setting methods being used by financial institutions

  • Ability to collaborate across an organisation to develop cohesive plans and outputs and effectively establish relationships

  • Ability to lead delivery of concurrent high-profile projects and tasks while handling complexity, maintaining attention to detail and working at pace

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to generate innovative ideas and solutions to challenge the status quo

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, tailoring approach to the needs of different audiences

  • Desired:
  • Understanding of the emerging approaches for portfolio alignment and leading solutions for transitioning key sectors and specific issues of relevance to financial institutions

  • Understanding of adaptation and circular economy challenges, along with emerging systems thinking approaches for environmental issues
