We have an exciting opportunity for a Strategy Director to join our Group Strategy Team. The Strategy Director will be a senior staff member in the Group Strategy Team - a small, supportive, and high-performing team led by Bupa's Director of Group Strategy and Transformation Office and reporting into Bupa's Group Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer.

This team advises Bupa Group's Management Team (the CEC) and Board of Directors on strategic decisions in support of our purpose and ambition, working across the Bupa portfolio and the dynamic health insurance and provision markets we operate in. In particular, the team focusses on group-level strategy development, and group-wide strategy execution and transformation.

The Strategy Director will lead projects that are vital to the development and execution of Bupa's corporate strategy.

How you'll help us make health happen:

  • Working with Executives, Bupa's Board and other senior stakeholders to define group-level global strategy and transformation plans, and to communicate that strategy clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Working across the business to assess key strategic challenges facing the business, and to scope projects related to all aspects of Bupa's "strategy star" (e.g. portfolio management, current strategy, future strategy).

  • Allocating resource from the Team and making arrangements for collaborative working with other Group Functions, MU and BU Teams.

  • Overseeing the planning, storyboarding and execution of multiple strategy projects simultaneously, to a Board-quality standard of output.

  • Leading presentations to and discussions with senior internal and external stakeholders, up to and including CEC and Board sessions.

  • Helping to coordinate the team's broader programme of thought leadership, market scanning, external engagement, insight generation and management of relationships with partners including Venture Funds.

  • When necessarily, leading the procurement of support from external consultants, and then managing their delivery.

University degree required. MBA or MPP desirable.

  • Other relevant professional qualifications in finance or strategy preferable.

  • Experience of operating at a senior level in a strategy environment, either in consulting/advisory or in a strategy/corporate development/commercial function in a business. Healthcare or financial services experience strongly preferable.

  • Good leadership and people skills; must have experience of managing people, running recruitment processes, onboarding staff, and participating in performance review processes.

  • Proven ability to both career-manage and support the development of team members, and to resource and task-manage the delivery of a portfolio of projects and initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, scope, project plan, guide, review, re-shape and polish the output of significant corporate strategy projects / M&A projects / portfolio analysis exercises - covering health funding and provision.

  • A strategic thinker with the demonstrated ability to think commercially and strategically to address key business issues or unlock areas of opportunity.

  • Strategic storytelling and communication skills, proven ability to craft strategic narratives of a CEC- and Board-ready quality.

  • Proven ability to lead in an extremely dynamic and fast-moving environment;

  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills with the ability to build and maintain senior (e.g. Head Of-level and above) relationships internally and externally - and to build influence with senior stakeholders / be able to align senior stakeholders in relation to complex strategic topics. Must have the scope to develop CEC- and Board-level credibility.

  • Must be intellectually curious, understand the power of difference in building teams and communities, and demonstrate a nuanced understanding of how cultural differences can shape strategy.

  • Understanding of advanced strategy analysis principles and deep knowledge of strategy tools and frameworks. Knowledge and interest in current strategic and management thinking.

  • Must have up to date knowledge of granular trends and developments in the health insurance, provision, and care sectors (including physical and digital provision) and knowledge of competitor and new entrant strategies and business models. Insight into specific Bupa markets is highly desirable.

  • The role reports into the Director of Group Strategy and Transformation Office (DGSTO) but must have the ability to lead work independently and build trusted, transactional, and effective relationships with Chief, Director, and Head Of-level staff from across the business.

Our benefits are designed to make health happen for our people. Viva is our global wellbeing programme and includes all aspects of our health - from mental and physical, to financial, social and environmental wellbeing. We support flexible working and have a range of family friendly benefits.
