Full Job Description

In this exciting role as a System Test Engineer, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager - Sustainability & Support, you will be responsible for new product test definition and specification, qualification testing and analysis of the results.

The role will be based at the Hitachi Rail Stoneham Place, Eastleigh office, moving to a hybrid arrangement upon completion of probation. Within this role there will be a requirement for the successful candidate to travel to other Hitachi UK sites on occasion, with limited, less frequent international travel.

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Writing test specifications from product requirements and specifications to cover firmware and hardware test.

  • Execution of new product qualification testing.

  • Support Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) activities in new product development projects.

  • Analyse test data, produce test reports and recommend areas for product design and process improvements for improved production yield and in-service reliability.

  • Support investigations into in-service failures: analysis & screening of in-service data, troubleshooting of returned material, detailed root cause analysis and investigations.

  • Essential
  • Experience in development and delivery of detailed test programmes inclusive of:

  • + writing test specifications from product requirements and specifications
    + design and build of bespoke test equipment;
  • Experience in testing and analysis of complex electromechanical systems with an understanding of both mechanical and electronic failure modes and issues.

  • An excellent understanding across a broad range of fundamental scientific principles - Vibration and needs to have a broad understanding of all aspects.

  • A self-motivated, self-starter able to carry responsibility and understand the need for and demonstrate a sense of urgency.

  • Very good oral and written communication, presentation and team skills.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.


  • Desirable
  • Qualification in Engineering or closely related discipline or demonstratable experience in role.

  • Experience of Vibration/shock testing and accelerated life testing

  • Experience in complex analysis of large data sets inclusive of development of software tools (e.g. MatLab, Python, etc) for manipulation, presentation and interpretation of data

  • Experience of planning and managing projects.
