Full Job Description

As a TEMPEST and EMC/EMI Systems Engineer, you will support multiple design and build projects. Duties include the performance of electromagnetic effects analysis, including Tempest, Electromagnetic Compatibility/Electromagnetic Interference (EMC/EMI), Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), electrostatic discharge (ESD) and lightning review.

Within the electrical engineering group, the Tempest and EMC/EMI engineer must work across diverse engineering disciplines in support of multiple marine projects. The role will require the Tempest and EMC/EMI engineer to deliver valued oversight across all phases of the design lifecycle. To meet these challenges the Tempest and EMC/EMI engineer must have a strong aptitude for learning new and exciting innovations and a strong Tempest and EMC/EMI skill set.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to deliver complex electrical/ electronic solutions within an exciting, interesting team environment. Each week will provide you with new challenges that will test your skills and knowledge.

Your main responsibilities as a Tempest and EMC/EMI Systems Engineer will involve:

  • All programs have Tempest and EMC/EMI requirements, so a Tempest and EMC/EMI engineer must be capable of writing, interpreting, allocating, tailoring, and flowing down

  • Produce Tempest and EMC/EMI requirements at all design levels. Tempest and EMC/EMI engineers need to present at design reviews to internal and external customers regarding Tempest and EMC/EMI issues.

  • Must be capable of writing Tempest and EMC/EMI design guidelines, developing models and performing analyses on components, subsystems and systems using Tempest and EMI principles.

  • Responsible for designing ground systems, chassis and harness shielding, EMI filters, and selecting and laying out interface circuitry for achieving EMC and Tempest.

  • Required to prepare and review Tempest and EMC/EMI test procedures, Tempest and EMC/EMI test reports, Tempest and EMC/EMI technical analyses, Tempest and EMC/EMI control plans, and participate in cross discipline design reviews for EMC.


  • This role is full time 36 hours hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home. It could be based on site at Bristol, Devonport or Rosyth.

    Essential experience of the TEMPEST and EMC/EMI Systems Engineer:
  • EMC/EMI experience

  • Working knowledge of lab test equipment such as spectrum analysers, generators, amplifiers, and measurement antennas.

  • Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to successfully allocate, tailor, and flow down system level EMC/EMI requirements into lower-level requirements.

  • Ideal candidates can show extensive design experience with EMI filters, circuit layout and analysis for EMC/EMI, shielding, lightning protection, cable, and harnessing design.

  • Candidates with working knowledge and experience in modelling and simulation of EMC/EMI using commercially available software is a plus

  • You will have a high level of developed knowledge as the role is directly accountable for design development and determining solutions to problems and issues within the specialist subject area., Qualified to degree level, or HNC/HND equivalent, coupled with significant experience in the relevant engineering discipline.

  • Preferrable but not essential a master's degree in electrical engineering, with a specialty in Electromagnetics, RF, or analogue circuitry is preferred.

  • Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold or working towards Chartered or Incorporated status or you will have significant demonstrable engineering experience and capable of registration with the Engineering Council at CEng level.


  • Security Clearance
    The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
